For the Love of Bagels

My sister and I just got back home from picking up a few groceries.

During the shop, I remembered it was National Bagel Day. I also remembered that Dempster's introduced their newly formulated bagels in celebration of National Bagel Day. So, we headed over to check them out.

Sure enough, there was new packaging and it said new recipe on my old favourite. Feeling the bagels inside I could instantly tell a difference. New Dempster's Bagels feel very soft and fresh. I bought original, cinnamon raisin, and everything....I'll let you know shortly what we think!

In the mean time, we'll be celebrating National Bagel Day with Dempster's new recipe bagels.

My go-to Valentine's Day dessert is a rich chocolate cake with pink icing made in my heart shaped pans. This year, I am planning on making heart shaped pizzas to go along with my cake.

Valentine's Day with Disney Junior #DisneyJuniorMom

It's funny, isn't it? It's funny that after one has children, Valentine's Day becomes all about them.

Of course they need that cute little shirt, and matching socks. Of course we have to find little gifts like stuffed animals and love-themed books. If we are so inclined, we also buy our little ones special chocolate treats. Don't forget the home baking - cupcakes with red sprinkles and cinnamon heats, or heart shaped cut-out cookies. I love doing each and every one of these things. Showering my little ones with love at Valentines' Day, simply makes my heart sing.

I have a fun idea, to share, from our friends at Disney Junior.

How about making your very own e-card with your little Valentine, adorned with their favourite Disney Junior friends? Jillian and I had a cuddly time on the couch designing our card. We will send it to Daddy on Valentine's Day from his little girl.

As, I'm sure you know by now, I LOVE special-day themed programming. Disney Junior will not disappoint with some very warm and fuzzy programming for Valentine's Day!

Thunderbutt's happy place #campmemories

Sometimes kids can be mean.

We've all been there and felt the heart-break of knowing your child is being left out or being bullied at school. Now, image a divine place where everyone is treated with love and respect. Where children are welcomed with open arms. Where #campmemories are made and are so wonderful that they last the whole year through, not to mention what will most likely be a lifetime.

We are so lucky to have a spot in Perth county, in a clump of trees, which is home to a little place called Camp Bimini.

Camp Bimini is not fancy, nor is it on a glistening lake. Camp Bimini doesn't need those things to make it special.

My children have been going to summer camp at Bimini for several years now. It is not only the high-light of their summer, it has been key in shaping them into happy children. As we wait in line for registration they find familiar faces and new friends.

Camp Bimini has been in operation since the 1940's. Over the years, they've kept it simple. Summer camp at Bimini is all about old-fashioned fun.

Besides making friends for life, the kids say their memories of summer camp are songs, skits, games, vespers, campfire and fun meals.

Thunderbutt is my son, Matthew. Two years ago he was given the nickname at summer camp and he proudly wears it. Staff at camp welcomed Matt last year by yelling out Thunderbutt!

Thunderbutt is so attached to camp and the councilors, that he cries his little heart out when it is time to go home. As his mom, I feel so sad for him that his heart is breaking, but I'm also so thankful for his week at camp being such a positive experience. I remind him that next year will be here before he knows it - even though at the time it seems like it'll be forever.

Registration forms will be available within a few weeks now. We will be stalking the site for the moment 2012 camps are announced! I can not recommend summer camp enough for any child. It is an enriching experience with #campmemories that will keep forever. Kids don't keep, but the memories sure will.

Having a costume party in February?

Well, I'm not, but the kids in my daughter's class are. And, I think it is a great idea! It breaks up the monotony of the winter and gives the kids something to look forward to.

There's a bit of a problem though, costumes aren't easily found in retails stores right now. We do have a specialty costume store in a city near by, but they are expensive. This is when I turn to Costume Supercenter.com.

I told Emily to take a look at Costume Supercenter.com and see if anything caught her eye, I gave her a little direction of course. The great thing about shopping with Costume Supercenter.com is they ship to Canada all year through and their selection is always fantastic. Even though this is not peak time for costume buying, they have loads of choices. Emily liked quite a few costumes and book marked for me to make the final decision. She liked fun womens costumes, like 50's costumes and Mardi Gras costumes. Yet, finally, we agreed on this adorable costume...

I think it is really cute and age appropriate, and Emily likes it too.

Recently, our community had spring sports sign up night. When asking my eight year old son what he was wanting to play this spring his said football. Unfortunately, for him our town doesn't offer football for kids. For a Canadian boy, he is a big football fan. So, you can just imagine his excitement over Super Bowl on the weekend.

Saturday, we got out to Zehrs (Loblaws) to pick up the ingredients for our Game Day Chili, some munchies and diet pepsi. You can see my Google + Story here with pictures and details of our shopping trip. It was fun shopping with my sister and her family, as well as my kids! The store was all decked out for the Super Bowl, check out the awesome display of #teampepsi right inside the doors.

On the menu besides chili, was nachos and salsa, and for dessert Matthew and I made a football shaped cake. I admit, not exactly the healthiest meal I've ever put together, but, Super Bowl only happens once per year.

We put together the chili and let it simmer in the crock pot all day, until game time.

The chili powder has been added, and gets mixed in

Meat is added - now it simmers for several hours

Two hours before serving, add half a bag of frozen kernel corn

Voila! Chili is ready and it's game time

We are a diet pepsi family through and through so I was really happy to see that 12 packs of pepsi were on sale this week, along with Orville Redenbacher popcorn - perfect for munching on throughout the game!

I loved the half time show with Madonna. People are criticizing her for lip-syncing, but from what I've heard, performers have to lip sync at the Super Bowl. I had a great time watching with my family, and seeing Matthew's reactions throughout the game. Even more fun was participating in a #pepsivscoke twitter party during the second quarter.

What did you think of the game? Do you watch for the football, for the commercials, or the half time show? I was a little booed out that my team didn't win, but as a whole I thought the game was full of action and good plays.

Super Bowl Sunday turned out to be a great day for my family!

#KinderMom ~ Solutions for families dring the March Break

I am thrilled to be back as a #KinderMom in 2012.

Kinder Canada looks to find the little joys in life and making time to play each and every day. Which pretty much epitomizes my own life motto. A partnership with Kinder just seems to be a great fit!

With our March break from school right around the corner, I like to line up some fun activities for the kids to take part in. Yet, I don't want to be breaking the bank while spending the week together.

One of our all time favourite places to visit is the Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario. We never get tired of visiting and seeing beautiful butterflies. It is fantastic for kids of all ages. It is close enough to home, yet it is far enough to make it a full day outing. I like it for it's educational value, but shh...don't tell the kids they might be learning a thing or two while they are there.

We are so lucky to have an amazing library in our community, which welcomes children through their doors with open arms. Our local library offers children's programming at minimal cost. And, my kids LOVE spending time at the library. Often they plan special craft and activity days, where you can drop your kids off for a few hours at a time. It gives the kids a chance to get out, while expressing their creative side, and it gives mom a few minutes to do what needs to get done. Usually, during the March Break our library also sponsors a family movie night. The kids take their blankies and pillows and cuddle down to enjoy a fun movie with some popcorn and juice.

Not to be forgotten, in our town we have a great community center, which has a pool and ice pads. They have open to the public sessions, but if we get really lucky there will be a sponsored swim or skate for the whole family.

Once, I start looking around our community it is easy to find ways to put in our days during the March break from school. We will be finding the little joys in life together!

I love to bury my nose in the spine of a good book, yet with three children and an active blog, I often find it difficult to find the time to get into a book. Lovesick had the power to pull me out of that reading funk. Immediately, I was drawn into Lovesick from the prologue right through to the back cover. I can only read at night when the rest of the house is asleep, a time when I am usually falling into bed at the end of the day, myself. However, I found myself immersed in the life of a teenage boy, his best friend and their mutual love interest. I was in the midst of a juicy love triangle.

I'm not going to reveal too much, because I think this is a wicked good read, and want people to feel the same excitement I did while reading it.

Lovesick is a tale of innocence lost, heart break and tragedy. A tale which had my mind racing. As I read I thought I had it all figured out, only to have it all crash down in the end.

Lovesick pulled me in. My heart raced and my heart broke. I found myself thinking about the book throughout my day, in anticipation of reading more later that night.

Even though the winter has been really mild and a little nutty, I can't help but turn my sights toward warmer days ahead. I am longing for green grass and leaves. Who knows, maybe that is why I went crazy for the colours in the a new spring collection from OPI .

On the weekend, the weather was rather snowy, it was the perfect day for mixing up my Red Velvet Cupcakes.

The mix makes a dozen cupcakes, or you could also make it in a cake pan if you wished. Finding that the icing was included was a nice bonus - but, I'll admit to being a little skeptical about it. I am not a big fan of pre-made icing. In the spirit of product reviews I was willing to give it a try though.

The cupcakes baked up light, fluffy and moist, and they tasted oh-so-yum!

I was even pleasantly surprised that I liked the icing as well. Just knead the icing pack and squeeze out onto the cupcakes.

I thought the cupcakes looked great, and tasted equally as good!

Shortly, we will be flipping our calendar and welcoming one of my favourite months of the year - February.

I love all the red and pink hearts, and the warm fuzzy feelings of love which the month brings. It is also a good time of the year to take note of our heart health, and Cheerios is here to help.

We all know that Cheerios are tasty and a great way to start the day....or by the handful as a snack throughout the day. Yet, have you heard that including Cheerios in your daily routine can also help to lower cholesterol?

Cheerios helps to lower cholesterol simply by containing beta-glucan, a soluble fiber, which is found in whole grain oats. The oat fiber acts as a sponge to soak up some of the cholesterol in our body, so we can naturally rid ourselves of it.

Having high levels of cholesterol can be a factor leading to heart disease.

Recently, I was put on medication for high blood pressure. While I now know I need to work at lowering my blood pressure, I am also aware that I need to open a dialogue with my doctor and find out about my cholesterol levels. I have an appointment coming up and I am going to go in with some pretty specific questions and find out how I can make sure my heart is healthy. I think including Cheerios in my diet is a good start to controlling my cholesterol.

A poopy phenomenon

Yesterday, right after our supper, I take our dog out and walk down the sidewalk of our street. It isn't a far walk, but it is enough for Roxy to get a little exercise and for her to have a chance to go to the bathroom. Yesterday, it poured rain and all of our snow is gone once again.

You'll remember that dog ownership was new to us last spring and this is our first winter having a dog, so I guess I never really noticed this phenomenon before.

People don't seem to pick up their puppy poop when there is snow on the ground.

But why?

I am guessing that people think it is covered in snow so it isn't visible-no harm, no foul.

Then, the snow melts. Yet, dog poop doesn't melt, and now the ground and sidewalk is covered, and it certainly isn't frozen. I have three children who walk the sidewalk daily to go to and from their bus stops. It is oh-so-pleasant when they track wet dog poop into the house on their boots.

I just don't get it? I don't remember seeing dog poop everywhere the rest of the year. I would never not stop and scoop up my dog's poop, she is small, but mighty. I can only imagine the mess I would be leaving behind if I didn't. Is it just me, or is it the responsibility of the dog owner to pick it up, no matter the time of year?

Roxy joined our family at the end of March 2011. She was born January 22, 2011, so today we celebrate her birthday!

We previously had a cat for 14 years, so getting a puppy was a bit of a shock.

We quickly came to realize that looking after a puppy was a lot like bringing home a new born baby.

We also had to deal with a daughter who was very jealous of the puppy and we found that she took to urinating in the house on the floor to prove that point. Oh, and she was also caught peeing by the fire hydrant on the corner of our lawn. Luckily, she came to understand that the puppy was not replacing her, but that Roxy was a pet addition to our home.

Roxy began to grow really quickly, and she became larger than we expected her to be. Roxy loves her family and (we think) that she is really lonely when we aren't at home. She gets so excited to see us come back through the door. Which really makes us smile, after all cats don't seem to pay much attention to whether or not your at home, so this is a big change.

I can say without a doubt that Roxy has fit in wonderfully with our family. She is well loved and definitely soaks all that love up. She does really well with the kids and tolerates a lot from them. It is hard to believe she is officially no longer a puppy after today.

The Original Slow Cooker ~ Crock Pot {giveaway}

Many people I know, love their crock pot, and profess their undying devotion. But, how many actually take their crock pot with them when they leave home for a few days?

Let me share the aspects of this small appliance, which have knocked my socks off.

First impressions are huge, and it was love at first sight with this crock pot. It is elegant and sleek and looks fabulous sitting on the counter.

There are folding handles on the sides, making it so easy and convenient if the crock pot needs to be carried and transported

The lid suctions to the stoneware, making it very efficient at keeping the heat in

Yet, it is the convenience of using a crock pot, which inspires me to use mine on an average two or three times a week. It is so easy to throw your ingredients together and simply set it and forget it. Within no time your home is filled with the smells of home-made, nutritious meals without any fuss. Crock potting has come a long way in recent years, I can now find a plethora of great recipe ideas. And, don't think for a moment that using a crock pot is a winter-time activity, I use mine all year round. (It is fantastic for the winter, though)

The Edge

After spending a beautiful afternoon at the beach, we decided to take the kids on a little scenic journey on the way back to the cottage. But, I had no idea of the magnitude of beauty we were about to encounter. It was absolutely breathtaking, and I wished we had a picnic to enjoy, as there was lots of tables and fire pits around. (mental note for next year, maybe)

Finding the look out area was amazing, but, it also caused me to have major anxiety. The rail fence was the only barrier that was preventing you from stumbling off the side of the cliff. It was a big drop, and the kids really wanted to take a good look at the edge.

I have spoken at length about my childhood memories of my Grandma and our time spent baking in her kitchen. What is one ingredient which tends to go into just about every baked good?

Yes, this is a post about eggs and my emotional attachment to eggs.

While Grandma and I cracked eggs in the house, my Grandpa was outdoors working. Grandpa was an egg producer.

I spend hours-on-end gathering eggs, sorting eggs, and placing eggs in cartons, to be sold in his hatchery. It was a definite labour of love for Grandpa, and he had many, many customers who came daily to buy their eggs directly from the farm. Ultimately, I look at a egg and I think of those days spent with Grandpa and his eggs.

Things may be done a little differently now, but the Egg Farmers of Canada are just as dedicated to providing the best eggs to families right across our country.

We've all heard about the health benefits which eggs offer us. In my home we consume a lot of eggs each week, most weeks at least a dozen and a half. The kids have adopted my love of eggs, well at least eating them.

Kraft Dinner Smart

Kraft Canada is a well known and trusted name in our home, and I would be willing to bet - at a lot of homes across our country.

We always have several boxes of Kraft Dinner in our pantry. My kids ask for it, and it's always a well received side dish to accompany any meal. The kids smother it with ketchup and I never have any left-overs when KD is on the menu. When we were asked to try out new Kraft Dinner Smart, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to try out the new variety, yet, I was a little worried about my sometimes-picky-eaters.

I figured my best approach was just not to say anything about the switch in Kraft Dinner. Often my kids are more receptive to something new if it is done quietly, without fanfare. Ultimately, though Kraft Canada came up with Kraft Dinner Smart to help with dinner time battles. Kids big and small love KD, so why not give them a healthier option?

I've never found myself to be a strong new year resolution maker. Maybe it stems from a fear of failure.

Failure is not an option in 2012, thanks to a little inspiration from our friends at Life Made Delicious.

I am not referring to huge life altering changes, either. Disney Junior is Magical in January

I love the fresh start which a new year brings.

Yet, as a mom, it is also a little bittersweet. As pages on the calendar flip you realize that days slip into weeks, weeks slip into months and months slip into years. And, when you have children you realize that childhood also quickly slips away. {{sigh}} Don't get me wrong, I love watching my children reaching their milestones and we celebrate their accomplishments.

This year, I will find myself no longer having a kindergartener. Jillian is super excited and is talking about grade one all the time. But, how can it be that I will never have another child in kindergarten again? {Another sigh.} In fact, I'll have another child starting high school in the fall. Not to mention, I will be celebrating a milestone birthday in 2012.

Sometimes milestones are bittersweet indeed. However, time does march on and here we are welcoming 2012.

Friday evening, CBC's Marketplace aired their first episode of the new year. The topic discussed is certainly a hot button issue with a lot of folks. Me included.

I watched the episode online and then read through a lot of the viewers comments. And, it got me thinking about my own experiences with the three biggest offenders as listed on the episode.

This time last year I wrote a couple of posts speaking of my experiences with Zellers. I was asked to remove my posts, which I didn't. In the end I did receive a resolution to my issue, several weeks later, but nonetheless.

I had issue with the CBC program and their customer service complaint at Zellers. The company has a policy which clearly states their return policy. The employee and manager followed the policy. Their policy is there for a reason and employees are expected to abide by them. Yes, exceptions can be made, but they are not to be expected, after all, everyone has a reason why the policy doesn't apply to them. Here's the problem (in my opinion) policies are fairly new to us. It wasn't that long ago that businesses didn't really have anything in writing. I worked retail for 20 years and I can remember when we just took care of people and their issues on an individual basis.

CBC's example was ridiculous. Why would the store take back a used item? Any large item like that, usually has a printed slip saying not to return it to the retail location and to contact the manufacturer, yet, that was not mentioned in the segment. And that guy got a $100 gift card for his complaint! The customer in the segment was very mild mannered and appeared to be a gentleman. I tend to believe that he was being honest and saying the lawn mower didn't live up to his expectations, yet that doesn't matter in the world of returns. If Canadian Tire doesn't accept used mechanical equipment back, you must follow proper channels to make your complaint. Which in this case, was most likely contacting the manufacturer directly.

I know from my own experiences with Canadian Tire that most stores are franchised. It is up to each owner's discretion how they want to handle a customers complaint. Likely, if accepted back at the store that lawn mower would of sat in the back room for weeks, and then eventually be thrown down the garbage shoot.

My experience with Canadian Tire was with an item that scanned at a price higher than the shelf price. I asked about the scanning code of practice, and if they participated, which I was told they did not. However, it was posted on the door. After the employee spoke to her supervisor, I was told again they didn't do that. I contacted Canadian Tire customer service and was told it was up to each owner if they wanted to opt in. After several weeks, of not hearing from the owner, who I was told would call me, I got in touch with customer service by telephone again. Later that week I did receive a call from my local owner offering me the scanning code of practice.

The example on the program was a gal with a photo book and the obscene amount of time it took to get it to her. Yes, I agree Walmart completely dropped the ball in regards to the book. Her book should of been compliments of the store and maybe a small gift card would of been in order.

Another, point they made was looking for clerks and asking for assistance. True, it is rather difficult to find clerks in most stores. Why? My experience tells me they have one (maybe two) clerks working per section. And, if you find a clerk in one section they don't know other sections of the store, because they are hired for that department alone. Each department has a budget and a certain number of hours, you don't let your employee go work in another department without charging that to the other department. And, if you are looking for an opinion on a certain product, they used coffee makers in the segment, how would the employee at any of these stores have an opinion? They don't let you use or sample the products, and unless you own it personally how would they know? If you want an opinion or recommendation, you are shopping at the wrong kind of store! You need a specialty store.

I don't shop all that much at Walmart, but when I do I wait forever in super long lineups to pay for my items. I would say an average of 15 minutes in line is the norm. Waiting to return sometimes is even worse. Maybe, that is why I don't shop there a lot, I simply just can't stand for that long!

I was rather surprised that the company I worked for wasn't mentioned in the piece. Lord knows, we had complaints. I dealt with them daily. Yes, there were times we dropped the ball and the customer should be making a complaint. At the same time, complaints should be made properly. Swearing, assaulting, harassing are not the proper channels to voice a complaint.

What are your thoughts? I think that a person's perception differs greatly depending if you've ever worked the other side of the counter. Obviously, I have.

After taking a much needed break from posting, I am looking forward to what 2012 is going to bring to my blog. (But, I can't help but look forward to my summer break!)

But, seriously, winter in southern Ontario is being very kind. We've had very little snow and the temperatures are staying really quite mild. So, if this is winter, I'm loving it!

Thinking ahead into the new year, I will continue to offer product reviews and giveaways. I've watched some fellow Canadian bloggers explode in their growth and reach and I'm really happy for them. I just don't have the energy or desire to push my blog in that direction. So, Country Mouse, City Mouse will remain a hobby. {I like it that way} I am really excited to get to know some of my fellow bloggers better and look forward to support them as I can. Now in my fourth year, I've come to realize that blogging is what you want it to be.

So, here's to 2012. I hope everyone has their best year yet!

Our Holiday Family Fun with Dell Inspiron 2320 All-In-One

Throughout the holidays, my family has experienced first hand the power of a Dell Computer.

Previously, I shared the technical details surrounding the Inspiron One 2320 All-in-One Touchscreen. (you can get caught up by visiting this post) Now, I am sharing our hands on experience.

Upon unpacking the computer, my first thoughts were holy cow...this thing is huge. And, it is. The Inspiron One 2320 boosts a 23" screen which is the most clear and crisp screen I've ever seen. Even though it is large, the Inspiron One 2320 takes up very little space, due to its sleek design. I was so excited to have a state of the art system in my home. The screen is so wide that we could have two sites open at once, full size!

There is virtually no set up with this computer, and it is simple to get it up and running.

Yet, really it is the touch-screen which completely blew us away. Having the convenience of a touch-screen is easy and fun and a great option for the kids. And, now that it is packed up and sent back, we are finding ourselves continually patting at the computer screen wondering why we aren't getting results.

We didn't just make use of the touchscreen though, we also enjoyed the wireless keyboard and mouse.

We think this is a great computer for the whole family to enjoy.

It comes with a remote control and plays DVDs, (additional Blu-ray is available) making the Inspiron One 2320, entertaining for everyone. Because it is so light-weight and slim, it is easily transported from room to room. I enjoyed it in the kitchen while doing some holiday baking. The large screen allowed me to view recipes which I had called up, while standing at the counter. Likewise, the kids could hook up their gaming system with the HDMI input, or even watch some of our favourite holiday specials on television, since it has a tv tuner.

Our bottom line is we thought this was the perfect family computer.

It has a fast processor, and a high quality sound system. But, most important for a family with young children, right through to teenage kids we thought it was very user friendly. I think this is a great computer for all your needs - office, or home.

And, now that it is gone, I've found myself perusing Dell Canada , where I found some purchasing options which look quite inviting. From free shipping to finance options, Dell offers consumer-friendly purchase plans.

They may even get away from you and you'll have to chase after them. Matthew especially thinks it is hilarious if a hexbug runs past our puppy. Our dog is pretty curious, but she is also a little timid of hexbugs.

We find the playground to be really well made and stands up well to the wear and tear of young children. The hexbugs themselves are tough little critters, and the batteries which are included are long-lasting.

These little guys are hours of fun. Hexbugs are also a great collectable item. The hexbug nano has loads of colour choices, which we really love. 'Twas The Week Before Christmas.... #EqualCanada #CBias

'Twas the week before Christmas and we are stressed!

Stressed with everything which needs to be done in the next few days. Cards need to be addressed and posted, presents need to be wrapped, some even need to be purchased still, and don't forget a little holiday baking thrown in as well. Not to mention, my children are still in school this week, (don't even get me started on that one) so we are still working around that. Sometimes it seems the true meaning of Christmas is lost in all the hustle and bustle during the days leading up to the big day.

Sunday morning, my husband and I found ourselves childless - which never happens. We decided to take advantage of a couple of child free hours and take a little time for ourselves, and enjoy a slower pace.

One of my all time favourite things is McDonald's breakfast, yet, I only get the opportunity to have it a couple times a year. As a nice treat we thought we would stop at McDonald's and enjoy a hot breakfast along with their delicious McCafe coffee.

In the small town we live there isn't a McDonald's, but we can drive over to the closest city, which has two outlets which we can choose from. One is renovated and is a true McCafe, and the other is a smaller, older style restaurant. There isn't a play area or the comfortable seating, but we actually prefer this McDonald's. It is closer for us to frequent and we find the management staff to be attentive, and friendly with the customers. And, it was no different during our Sunday morning visit.

Entering the restaurant we found it decorated with some simple Christmas decorations, and it wasn't overly busy. The wait in line was quick and the food was prepared to order, arriving on our tray nice and hot. There was a big screen advertising McCafe coffee choices.

I ordered my favourite which is a McGriddle, with a large coffee to drink. They seemed to be selling a tonne of coffee this morning, as the manager was designating an employee to be in charge of brewing coffee. My cashier asked how I would like my coffee, I requested milk and #EqualCanada sweetener - to which I was told that Equal was not the sweetener they had to offer. Since, I'm not a big fan of the sweetener they offer @McD_Canada, I opted for sugar this time.

As, I was ordering the manager on duty overheard and chimed in that Equal wasn't a choice available at McDonald's. She said it once was, but not any longer. I suggested that I would like to see a choice of sweeteners available for customers and she directed me to the website, where I could leave my feedback.

We enjoyed our Sunday morning break in relative quiet. There were no excessive trips to the washroom, and no one's drink was spilled...the wonders of being childless for a few minutes! My husband and I even made a to-do list of everything which needs to get done before the big day. After, we rushed off to pick up a few groceries to get us through the week and to get the kids.

Our break was much needed, but, it was time to get back to reality! We found a few minutes of peace and holiday cheer, together on a Sunday morning.

Later in the afternoon, I dug my receipt out of my wallet so I could leave feedback about our visit and request that McDonald's considers offering Equal. (I had remembered from previous visits that you needed the receipt in order to fill out the survey form.)

Memory Lane

Back in the day, my brother and sister and I, only had one opportunity to see Santa in the weeks leading up until Christmas.

These days, children see Santa everywhere they go, at the mall, at Christmas parties, even on the street in our little town. Sometimes, I think that the thrill of Santa is lost a bit now with all these sightings.

When I was a kid, our one and only visit with Santa was at the firehall. The volunteer firefighters put on an annual hayride. We went to the firehall, waited in line for what seemed like forever, to sit on Santa's knee and receive a bag of candy. After, we lined up to board a hayride - an actual hayride on a hay wagon. Often, I can remember the hayride to be freezing cold with snow blowing in our faces. But, would we miss out and not go due to the weather? Not a chance!

When we returned from the hayride, there would be hot chocolate waiting to warm up our frozen bodies.

Last Sunday was the annual Granton hayride.

I took Matthew and Jillian, and my sister took her children, Lyla and Landon. What an amazing experience to have my sister and her kids here, to go with my children. So much was as we recalled, yet, so much was different too. It was still held at the firehall, there was Santa, but no line up to see him. There was a wagon ride but no hay. There was hot chocolate, and there were treat bags - just as we remembered!

I do think that the maybe the novelty of Santa is lessened then previous generations. But, the magic of Christmas is the same.

Taking a moment to see Christmas through the eyes of our children, completed my trip down memory lane.

I'm telling you, this is the dream pet. And, Matthew loves Alex and Elizabeth, just as he would a hamster or a kitten. He sits in front of Alex and Elizabeth and speaks to them. They are still a little shy of us and often become pretty still when we are peering in at them, but they definitely make us laugh and smile while we are watching them.

Prehistoric Home called me to arrange delivery and to make sure that Alex and Elizabeth wouldn't be left outdoors in the cold weather. I am very open to admitting that I enjoy a good cup of coffee. I find as I age, I'm finding myself craving coffee more and more. But, when it comes down to it, not all coffee is the same. Christmas cheer arrived early for this coffee lover when I found Nescafe Dolce Gusto under my (proverbial) tree.

The Piccolo is a cute little machine. It may be small in statue, but, it packs a huge punch. (The small size is great in my kitchen where counter space is limited.)

When the Piccolo arrived at my home, I packed up my old coffee maker without hesitation. So long to coffee which was always inconsistent, good bye to filters and slow running machines, see ya to coffee sitting in the pot throughout the day - getting horrid as the day progressed. Now, when I want a cup of coffee it is at my fingertips within a minute. The coffee is fresh, hot and delicious...each and every cup.

I am loving that I can make a quick cup of cappuccino mid-afternoon while addressing Christmas cards, or a chococino in the evening when I come back in from walking the dog. (And, in the summer I can make cold drinks as well.)

The Piccolo is ready when I am, and it is so easy to use.

In may little spot in the world, the weather has been delightful. If this is winter....I'm loving it! Matthew is now a little palaeontologist right here at home, piecing together his own T-Rex. The mom in me loves the educational value of the glow in the dark skeleton, yet, I too, love that I can walk into a darkened room and see it aglow!

Holiday Gifts Made Delicious

My fondest memory of my grandma is baking with her, in her little pantry. I can remember to this day her mixer and her bowl. We baked the whole year through, but, around the holidays we really whipped up a storm. Grandma and I made lots of homemade food gifts, and then after a couple of days of baking and making we would load up plates and deliver them to Grandma's friends, family and neighbours. And, in exchange, at most houses, they would give us a plate of their goodies. It was a cookie exchange before anyone really knew what a cookie exchange was!

Fast forward....Grandma is sadly no longer with us, but her love for the kitchen and baking lives on in me (and, I hope in my children as well.)

At one time, I was famous for my home baking. I would channel Grandma and make up gifts of home made baking for my neighbours. Then, life happened and baking went by the wayside, there was even years I would purchase baking from a local inn.{gasp} This year I am bringing back home-made goodness, thanks to the easy recipes at Life Made Delicious.

Homemade cereal mixes are one my favourites during the holidays. In fact, I just made a sweet Chex mix this afternoon.

White Chocolate Chex

Crushed Candy Canes

This is so simple. Just spread the cereal on a baking sheet. Melt your chips in the microwave, meanwhile crush candy canes. Sprinkle the candy cane over the cereal, and then spread the melted chips over the cereal. Get in there with your hands and mix it all up.

I picked up so red and green reusable plastic containers at the grocery store. The kids fill the containers and I finish our gift with a bow tied around the top.

So simple, so easy, and so appreciated by the recipient!

PKG ~ Purveyors of Fine Digital Accessories {Holiday Gift Idea}

Earlier this Fall, I took the show on the road. When one leaves their home overnight nowadays, one must take certain electronic devices - one being their laptop.

Now, my laptop has previously left home, and traveled comfortably inside of luggage. But, for this particular outing I wanted a laptop bag, for protection and ease of carrying. As I started to research and look for laptop bags, I came across PKG - Purveyors of Fine Digital Accessories.

Browsing through their site, I found lots of laptop bags and laptop sleeves and thought that these bags were exactly what I was looking for!

Christmas came early when I received a beautiful bag from PKG, called The Swollen PKG.

The Swollen is designed for women who want one PKG that can do it all. A female designed bag, the centre padded zip pocket will fit a 15.4” laptop, and all of your school or work needs. Two outside pockets let you really pack it in, but keep it compact enough to take out after a day’s work. This package does the job of 2 – and does it well.

Trying to express my love for this bag, without sounding like I am gushing is going to be difficult. I showed it to my sister and she agreed it was a gorgeous bag, and she asked if it was leather. In fact, The Swollen PKG definitely looks and feels like leather, but it isn't.

The middle of the bag is zippered, and this is where you can safely tuck your laptop. On either side of the zippered middle are snap compartments for carrying everything else that needs to tag along. The outside is white, and the lining on the inside pockets is a rich red colour. The bag has strong carrying straps and inside I found another removable strap which can be used for carrying over the shoulder.

This bag is excellent quality and really well made. In my opinion, this is the be-all-and-all when it comes to laptop bags!

3D Deco Light from 3D Light FX {Holiday gift idea}

Earlier this Fall, I was taking a little road trip with a fellow blogger, and as we drove we spoke about different products we've received and some of our favourites. My friend, was telling me about this cool light she had received for her eight year old son's bedroom. Having my own eight year old son, I was quite interested to learn more, and made a mental note to look up 3D Deco Lights when I got home.

Right away, I knew it was something that Matthew would not just like, but LOVE!

A couple of weeks ago, we received our very own Soccer Ball 3D Deco Light.

Matthew sleeps in the top bunk, and the age old problem and fight is over who will be turning the light off. So many disagreements have erupted over the light issue...but, not any more. Matthew can now turn off his light right beside where he is snuggled in for the night.

Besides, having a super cool visual effect, this light is functional. It runs on batteries, or it can be plugged in, which is so convenient. Being on the top bunk we use batteries, the 3D Soccer Light has given Matthew the perfect amount of light he needs to read a book quietly, or play a little game before he turns in for the night. I like that there isn't any need for what can be a dangerous cord right near where my child is sleeping.

We installed the light quickly, and found the instructions to be very easy to follow. (Huge selling point, in our opinion) We began by applying the crackle sticker to a clean wall. I've applied wall decals before, and the sticker was applied in the exact same manner. We then just mounted the light with the screws, which are included. (You will have to drill holes in your wall.) And, there was the new light on Matthew's wall.

As a parent, I'm happy that the light is lead free and won't overheat, since it has a LED bulb. The shine from the Soccer Ball Light is soft and makes a great night light also.

You can purchase at Wal Mart Canada, and online, where you will find a great deal on shipping.

I think these lights are a big hit with sports fans, boys and girls alike, since there are pink balls available as well. Kids will wonder how they got stuck into the wall, and so will adults. 3D Deco Lights are great, affordable gifts. And, they come from a Canadian company created by a dad!

I know that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can become overwhelming. And, all too often the true magic is over-looked.

I'm not oblivious to all that needs to be done in the next few weeks. Yet, I am taking the time to see Christmas through the eyes of my young children. Years slip away so quickly, and I don't want them to loose that magic of the season, just the thought of them growing older makes my heart sad. So, this is why I'm grabbing a snuggly blanket and curling up to watch some fun holiday-themed shows with my kids on Disney Junior.

Our Friday night visit to McDonald's McCafe #EqualCanada #CBias

McDonald's Canada has made a big push in recent months to be considered the first choice in coffee. They have even gone so far to renovate many restaurants, to give them grown-up appeal. Gone is Ronald McDonald and in his place are high-backed comfortable seating, wi-fi access and big screen televisions on the wall showing a Canadian favourite - a hockey game.

Yet, the kids are still excited by a visit to our local McDonald's. There is still a play area tucked inside, and in all honesty it is now a relaxing treat to sit, sip on a coffee, and wait for the kids as they play.

Often, my children associate @McD_Canada as a reward or special treat. If I've asked them to be well behaved for an event, they will ask if getting a Happy Meal could be a reward for doing what I've asked. Or, sometimes a meal at McDonald's, on a Friday night is a good way to end the week, and that is exactly how we kicked off this weekend!

After our meal, the kids headed into the play area, and I returned to the counter to order a coffee.

The staff member behind the counter asked me what I would like in my coffee. I was a little surprised by his asking since, I had noticed sugar, and sweetener at the condiment station. I had assumed that the customer was handed a black coffee and we could dress it as we wished, with what was available at the station. But, since he was asking, I requested Equal Sweetener in my medium coffee. After a moments hesitation he informed me that Equal wasn't a choice he could offer. Then, I inquired about a comment card to request that McDonald's consider adding @EqualCanada as an option for their customers. The staff member directed me to McDonald's.ca to voice my request, as there weren't any comment cards available in store.

As I was ordering my coffee, the customer next to me was also ordering one as well, and I overheard her asking for sweetener. As we both stood at the counter waiting for our orders to be ready, I took the opportunity to speak with her and ask her what her sweetener of choice was. After a brief discussion about sweeteners, she agreed with me that McDonald's could offer their customers a choice when it came to sweeteners.

When I returned home, I took the time to visit McDonald's.ca to look for an online comment form. Not finding that, I instead decided to take the customer satisfaction survey, this is where I found a space to voice my request.

I think McDonald's has done a great job with the McCafe concept. They are definitely marketing McCafe to adults and just by watching the number of people walking out with coffee cups or sitting around enjoying coffee, they are on track.

Folks like to have selection and options when ordering, and offering Equal Sweeteners would only make the McCafe experience all that much...sweeter!
