A Day of Family Fun at African Lion Safari

Located between Hamilton and Cambridge Ontario is African Lion Safari - a true destination gem.  I think I've been there once before in my life and now I can't imagine not making the trip once per year at the very least.  My youngest daughter, Jillian had her birthday last week, and as a special way to celebrate we spent the day at African Lion Safari, along with her special guest (her cousin).

African Lion Safari is celebrating it's 45th anniversary,  and it's where we got up close and personal with over 1000 animals and birds!  Did you know that African Lion Safari is Canada's original safari adventure?

We began our day by taking the tour bus through the animal reserves.  The bus tour (for a nominal fee) is a great way to see the park and also learn about the animals, thanks to the driver's commentary.   The bus is air conditioned and has large picture windows, which provide amazing views of the animals.  At African Lion Safari the animals roam free, while the visitors are caged within their vehicle.

African Lion Safari is recognized around the world for their conservation and breeding efforts with the Asian elephant, cheetah, white rhino, giraffe, and barn owl (just to mention a few).

The game reserves are what most people associate with African Lion Safari and the animals are definitely the stars of the show, but there is so much more to see and do.   We ventured through Kenya Gate, where we found hours of family fun.

We did everything from riding a pony, running off energy in the playground, taking a boat ride on the African Queen, enjoying an elephant show, riding an elephant and playing in the splash pad to cool down.
While, we had a full day, there were activities we missed out on and will make sure we make a point of doing next time we visit.  We were on the tour bus while the elephants swam and that is something we wanted to see.  The train ride, Nature Boy scenic railway had quite a long line when we got there and our crew wasn't about to wait, but it is something we want to do for sure.  There are two bird shows which we missed - Parrot Paradise and Birds of Prey flying demonstration, that we will plan to see next time, as well.

There is lots of picnic areas and we saw many families enjoying them.  A picnic lunch is a great idea, yet, there is a food pavilion with many food choices to fill the tummy.  We enjoyed a fresh pizza lunch that the kids loved.

We had an absolutely fabulous visit to African Lion Safari.  We liked that parking was included in the admission price and very accessible (meaning we didn't have to walk endlessly when we wanted to go back to our vehicle).  We thought that it was a relaxing day and even though there were plenty of visitors it wasn't crowded.   African Lion Safari offers families a affordable way to spend a day together, having fun and learning at the same time.

African Lion Safari is located at 1386 Cooper Road, Hamilton Ontario.  Hours of operation are 10 am until 5:30 pm (as of Sept 2, closing time is 4:00 pm), note that the grounds remain open for two hours after the ticket booth and game reserves close.  African Lion Safari is open from May through October.

Savings Bonus: Show your CAA card at the gate to get an instant discount on admission.

African Lion Safari is on facebook and if you visit my facebook page you'll be able to view other photos from our visit.  Thank you to African Lion Safari for hosting my family!

My son when on a trip with his daycare to the ALS this year. He came home and quickly declared that the Giraffes were his favorite.
I know we will be going back again next year!

We were just there a few weeks ago and loved it! We spent an entire day there and still didn't get to see everything. I can't wait to go back again next year! Love the new water park additions.

Looks like you had an amazing time! I haven't been to African Lion Safari since I was a kid and have fond memories. I'm sure my kids would love going too! Maybe next summer.
