But not mine.
Over the years, we've had many UPS and many DOWNS, as I think a lot of couples have. Our biggest achievement and most amazing "UP" are our three healthy, (mostly) happy children. These are the children, which made my husband a Dad.
In celebration of Father's Day coming this weekend, we are talking about Dads only. And, by that, we are talking about the memorable moments of Fatherhood (so far), according to my husband and father of my three children.
Fatherhood began at my family cottage in the summer of 1997. I was late and it dawned on us that we could buy a pregnancy test just for fun. I don't think that either of us really thought that the result was going to be positive. When it was, we both just stared at the stick for quite a while. We even kept it for several days. All of the pregnancies were special, yet there is something really memorable about the first baby, and especially finding out she was on the way.
Being present at the birth of all three babies was one of those moments in a man's life that is not easily forgotten. I know that it is common place now for dads to be present during the birthing process. But, it is an amazing moment to see your child make their way into this word. Our youngest child, Jillian was a difficult pregnancy. There were moments that we just weren't sure that she was going to be okay. It was a huge sigh of relief and so emotional when she was born and when the medical professionals surrounding the room turned and walked out, he knew that she was okay.
Fast forward many years, to present day where Dad is now teaching his oldest daughter to drive. It is pretty sobering to realize that the years are ticking away and the children are growing up.
Staying healthy is important to my husband. He is plagued with some chronic health problems, his main one being anemia. There have been times that he is so tired he's had no energy to do just about anything. Thankfully, even though he is still anemic he has some control by taking supplements. Not only, does he want to be present in their lives, he wants to be active and be a provider for our family.
I am proud that our son is looking up to his dad, as his role model. Matthew's dad is hard working, honest and loyal to his family. For my daughters, Emily and Jillian, their dad is the perfect role model for what a husband (and future father) should be.
Happy Father's Day to my husband!
