We were scared. We thought our friend was going to die, from starving herself. And, I really do think that she was close.
Our story has a happy ending though - many don't. Our friend agreed to treatment. She was gone for a long time. But, she accepted the treatment and got her life back. She even lives in the same town as me and her kids go to school with mine!
Now, having my own daughters, I have big dreams for them. Yet, I realize that all those hopes and dreams could change dramatically, within a blink of the eye. Emily is almost 16 years old and takes a lot of pride in her appearance. She often uses the word fat. It's not a pretty word, nor is the word diet. I want to take both of those words out of her vocabulary. I would much rather hear the word healthy.
Multi Grain Cheerios wants to help us eliminate those nasty words and replace them with healthy, and balanced lifestyle. Generation Healthy is a program aimed at encouraging woman/girls to recognize their self worth, and become part of the solution.
A recent poll of girls aged 10 -17, revealed some starting statistics:
- 3 in 5 women have been on a diet
- 52% of girls get their information about dieting & nutrition from family members
- 1 in 5 girls under the age of 18 are currently dieting
“We believe that nutrition is healthier than deprivation and that dieting is harmful to us and to our children. So let's embrace a healthy, balanced lifestyle, and empower the next generation to do the same by removing the word dieting from our lives and replacing it with words like nourished, strong, and fulfilled. Let’s use our influence to teach our children to live with healthy balance by living that way ourselves. Together, we can build a healthier future for every generation to come.”
