Tips for healthy eating while road tripping this summer #milkunleashed

This past week, I've been busy preparing my family for a two week vacation away from home.  We are heading to our family cottage in the Bruce Peninsula.  The time away is spent relaxing at the beach, playing in the sand, day tripping, and generally spending quality time as a family.  It is a wonderful opportunity each year for our family to reconnect and enjoy each other.

During our two weeks away, we spend a lot of time out and about, meaning meals and snacks are often eaten on the road at picnic areas or at the beach.  I don't mind picking up the occasional burger or ice cream cone as a treat, yet, it is important to me to make sure my kids are still getting the nutrition they need, even when we aren't eating at home.

Healthy eating tips

A little planning and thought before heading out, makes packing healthy eating options, simple.

Start with purchasing a good sized cooler which will accommodate the size of your family.  Then load up your cooler with tasty, simple food options.    We like homemade sandwiches, which I can prepare either in the morning or evening prior.   Some of our favourite varieties are egg and tuna salad, which keep beautifully in the cooler.  I also cut up carrot & celery sticks, which make perfect dipping snacks (we all know that kids love these).  We also pack granola bars and some fresh fruit to keep us satisfied.

Keep hydrated

One of the most important things on a road trip is making sure every one is well hydrated.    Shelf stable milk is a great solution for any traveling family.   Shelf stable milk, just like regular milk builds strong bones and offers 8 grams of protein and 9 essential nutrients.  Milk Unleashed is real milk, that doesn't require refrigeration and is perfect for our road trip, especially since it is available in tetra pak individual cartons.

I grew up drinking milk at every meal, so it is also important to me to include servings of milk in the daily diets of my children.   Milk Unleashed is easy-to-tote, and a convenient way to ensure the kids are still getting their important milk servings.    It is ideal for us, while on the road over the next couple of weeks, and we won't have to worry about the milk spoiling, or spilling!

Have to admit dislike drinking milk - compulsory at school in England then - and they would put it next to a radiator during the winter months - nothing worse than warm milk

I have always been a bit iffy about shelf safe milk, but I had my kids try it and they don't seem to mind. They still prefer cold cow's milk, but it's nice to know they will also drink shelf safe milk if needed.

I like the idea of being able to take milk on the go as my kids love to drink it!

I'll be honest, I don't like milk much in the first place and I don't think I'd care for this too much. Needs to be cold!

I've tried the shelf safe milk and I think it's good. My son likes the chocolate milk.

Love keeping shelf safe milk on hand in case we ever run out of the refrigerated milk. (Judy Cowan)

Shelf-safe milk is so fascinating! I discovered this a few months ago, but we don't drink much milk in our home.

I like to pack a cooler full of nutritious food as well. We don't drink milk but have lots of cool clean water on hand.

Shelf-safe milk could come in handy in so many situations. I wish I'd had it when my children were small.

I've never tried shelf safe milk and I'm not a huge fan of us humans drinking cow's milk to be honest. But, that being said, it could come in handy for baking or even disaster packing.

Never heard of Milk Unleashed. Interesting to know that such products exist but still like cold milk.

Im not a huge fan of the shelf safe milk - it just doesn't taste RIGHT to me... Great idea though for when you are travelling!

My tip? Use the grocery store for snacks verses stopping at a fast food place or convience store - you can find smaller servings of HEALTY options at the grocery store to keep you going!
