Every day is Family Day when you are raising children #LMDconnector

It was a gloriously sunny day in Ontario for Family Day.  I prefer long weekends during the summer months, yet Family Day in February is a good way to break up the winter.  Spring is coming, but not quite soon enough.

I am so lucky to work with some wonderful family-orientated companies.  Companies who value family and how precious our time is, spent together.  General Mills recognizes the importance of family every day of the year with great products, which allow us put together easy recipe ideas.  Food ideas to help us make the most of our family time together.

After all, every day is Family Day when we are raising our children!

Start the day with dessert

We began our day together,  by preparing a dessert to enjoy at the end of Family Day.

A few days ago, I saw a great looking simple recipe over at Life Made Delicious, which I've had on my mind, ever since.    My young children love frozen treats and desserts.  Once in a while I purchase them, but generally, I feel they are over-priced, and offer little nutritional value.     Frozen Banana Pops sounded like a great homemade alternative.

These are so simple to assemble, with jut a few ingredients I had on hand.   Before beginning, I read through the reviews on the site and saw that one reviewer had mentioned to substitute yogurt for peanut butter.  I had an ahha moment when I thought to use Peanut Butter Cheerios instead of plain.  But, really, use whatever kind of cheerios are your favourite or which you have on hand.

Ingredients:
  • Bananas
  • Wooden skewers
  • Yogurt
  • Peanut Butter Cheerios

Method:

Cover baking sheet with waxed or parchment paper.  Peel and cut the bananas and insert skewers.  Roll banana in yogurt and then sprinkle with cereal.    Place on baking sheet and freeze for at least one hour, our until firm.  Enjoy!

On with the day

As we, left our dessert treat to harden in the freezer we got on with our Family Day.

Our community offered a free skate or swim in the afternoon.  Free is a good thing in my books and I am thankful to community-minded sponsors who offer these activities to families on days like Family Day.

Then, spending some time together in the living room cuddled up in warm blankets to watch a movie was next on our agenda.    We were thinking of going to the movie theater together, but my lucky-duck of a son had already been to the movies twice over the weekend.   We decided he maybe had his fill of the theater for now.   So, an afternoon watching a movie in the living room was a good alternative.

Speaking of movies.....It's back!

One of General Mills most popular promotions is back.    Look for free Cineplex movie and snack offers on specially marked General Mills products.

From now until May 30th, enjoy a Free Movie or Snack.  When you purchase a marked product look on the inside of the box for a voucher code to redeem for the offer you would like.   I've already started to collect some codes and hope to get the opportunity to take the family to a movie in the next few weeks.  We don't really go to the movies much, so this is a pretty big deal around here - a bigger deal when we can enjoy it for free!

And, that's a wrap

Family Day 2013 has come and gone.  It was a great day to spend together and I am so thankful to have these kind of days to cherish.  The day even wrapped up with a lost tooth and a visit from the tooth fairy.

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the day with those who mean the most.
