The Beer Store & Holiday Baking #CBias

In the days of yesteryear  it was called the in and out store, which I remember well.

Today we all know it as The Beer Store, and I was visiting to buy beer to make a holiday recipe.

Until preparing for this shop, I had no idea that The Beer Store offers over 350 brands and varieties of beers in Ontario.  Perfect for the upcoming holiday season and the parties which accompany.   There are beers to appease even the most discerning palate.  This visit though, I am not going in to purchase beer simply for consuming, I am shopping at The Beer Store to purchase a beer to use in a holiday recipe.

We don't drink a lot of beer in our home, so I am not all that familiar with The Beer Store.  Prior to going to the store, I thought I would take a  peek at their website and become a little more acquainted.   The first thing I did was check store hours in my town.  My local, The Beer Store is only about three blocks from my house, and I pass by it several times a week, yet I wasn't certain if they were open later in the evening, or on Sundays.  While visiting the site, I found that The Beer Store had a fun Cooking With Beer section with lots of recipe ideas - including one perfect for holiday baking.

Shopping for Beer

Once I made my recipe choice,  I headed down the street to see what was going on at The Beer Store, and to ask the clerk to help me purchase the correct beer for this recipe.   Remember, I am not all that familiar with beer, let alone the beer which is called for in my recipe.  (Cherry wheat beer or a porter beer)  The manager of my local beer store informed me that he didn't carry cherry wheat beer, yet, he did have Rickards White, which he said would work just fine for the recipe I was wanting to make.   I was happy to be able to purchase in single cans, making it convenient to make this recipe.

Making Cherry Beer Cake

Cheery Beer Cake has several steps, but none too daunting.   I began by assembling my ingredients.  The Cherry Beer Cake is assembled in several different steps, starting with lining a bunt pan with sliced cherries.  Visit my Google+ album to find pictures of all the steps to assemble this festive cake, made with beer.

Cherry Beer Cake - The Beer Store

3/4 Cup Cherries, divided
2 Cups All-purpose flour
2 TSP Baking Powder
1/4 TSP Salt
4 Eggs, room temperature
2 Cups of Granulated Sugar
2 TSP Vanilla
2 TBS Butter, melted
1 Cup of Sweet Porter Beer or Cherry Wheat Beer
1 Cup of Icing Sugar

On a chilly afternoon, I warmed my home with the smell of a cake baking in my oven.  Instantly, my home filled with the ambiance of home baking, and the delicious smell lingered well into the evening.

The finished product is a dense and tasty cake.    Who knew baking with beer would produce such a pretty and delicious cake?  This recipe and others using beer as an ingredient, can be found by visiting The Beer Store website.

We don't have the Beer Store here in Saskatchewan and I'm not a beer drinker (although hubby likes it) but beer is great for baking and cooking. Beer bread is delicious and so is beer batter. I'll have to give this recipe a try :)

That looks delicious!! I can't believe the things you can do with beer in regards to cooking and baking. Since I don't drink alcohol, I tend to forget that it can still be used in food! :)

Honestly, I'm not a huge beer fan (never have, never will be) but when I cook with beer - I I can't help but gobble up my entire meal, lol. It's so strange! I bet that cake was delicious.
