Going on an Exchange!

We are thrilled that our high-school aged daughter has been asked to take part in a student exchange program with a school in Sherbrooke  Quebec.    Emily is an excellent student and French is one of her favourite subjects.  Having an opportunity to visit the province of Quebec will give her an idea of the culture and to practice speaking French in everyday conversation.    She will be going with SEVEC, which is youth educational exchanges.  Annually, SEVEC offers 5000 students in Canada the opportunity to participate in an exchange.

Visiting Quebec is near the top of my bucket list, so I am excited for her, and maybe even a tad bit envious of her voyage d'aventure in Montreal.

She will be visiting in February during the time of the Quebec Winter Carnival.  I am really hoping that she gets to the Carnival and maybe even meet Bonhomme.    Quebec is rich with history and different from what she knows here in Ontario.  I am pretty sure she will come home with a love and appreciation for Quebec and will set her sights on attending university there in a couple of years.

It will be a lot of fun being paired up with a Quebec student and their family.  It is such an awesome way to find out first hand about their daily lives, and how they live.  Even though we are all Canadians, Quebec truly has a distinct society, which she isn't familiar with, and can't be taught in a classroom.

If you've visited Quebec, what do you suggest is a must-see for my daughter, while visiting?

How great that your daughter is going on an exchange! What a great way to meet a new friend, learn a new language and find out about a different culture.

My high school hosted exchange students when I attended (many) years ago. It was such a great way for students to learn and gain some independence.
I hope she has a wonderful time!

Very cool! So excited for your daughter! I'm FROM Montreal, so I have HEAPS of places and things she could see and do! Of course she'll be visiting le Vieux Port and Vieux Montreal, right? I'll send you an e-mail, or else this will be a super long comment! LOL!

What an amazing opportunity. I have been to Old Montreal and it was absolutely incredible. Our 7 year old daughter is fluent in French as she attends an all French school. My dream is to rent a house for our family in Quebec for 1 month each summer once the girls are a little older.

I went on a similar exchange in college. I went on a little road trip and saw the Beluga whales in Tadoussac, as well as the pierced rock in Perce and the Forillon National Park. All of which I loved! If she can rent a car and grab a friend, it's worth seeing! And also Quebec City!
