During the last week before school begins, I try to help the children straighten their bedrooms and get their clothing sorted and accessible for the chaos of school mornings. I haven't put away any summer clothing yet, as I am hopeful that the kids will be wearing shorts and a tee shirt for at least the first few weeks of class. Though, I know most mornings will require a sweater or light coat, as they head down the street to catch the bus to school. Yet, by afternoon the sun will have warmed the day to temperatures that remind us of those lazy, hazy days which have just passed.
Our street once again returns to its silent serenity, as bikes and balls are silenced until after 3:30 in the afternoon, when the children come off the bus with their sweaters tied around their waists. Spending the day at the beach becomes a distant summer memory, and is exchanged for walks to and from the bus stop.
By late September, we may take an afternoon trip to an orchard to pick up apples, bringing home a bushel of crisp apples - perfect for eating and baking.
September afternoons are some of the most beautiful of the whole year. I can not wait to welcome each and every one of them and soak up all that they have to offer!
