Enjoying Summers Bounty

I grew up enjoying the bounty of a summer garden, and often feel badly that I am not able to offer that experience to my children. After all, there is nothing better than enjoying fresh-from-the-garden fruits and vegetables. Not to mention the knowledge that what you are enjoying on the table is there as a result of a little elbow grease. My kids had a lesson in gardening this past weekend when we visited their grandparents farm.

The kids watered and hoed and they harvested. We all enjoyed their efforts at supper time when we had freshly picked green beans, tomatoes, corn, and just dug potatoes. Then for dessert we had plump and juicy Fall strawberries.

Fall strawberries are fairly new to me, yet I couldn't be more excited about them. We love berries and now having the opportunity to enjoy Ontario strawberries right into October is exciting! You can be assured that I will always have a basket in my fridge and eat them by the handful, in conjunction with other favourites like blueberries, peaches and raspberries.

With Fall right around the corner as well, it is also a time I get back to the basics. It is time to get back to family comfort meals and desserts. Just this week I received my Life Made Delicious email and found some yummy looking (and sounding) easy recipes using all this wonderful local fruit.

Honestly, I am not a big baker with fruit, chocolate yes, but not fruit. So, I am pretty excited to be trying out some of these easy recipes, especially now that Fall strawberries are so abundant, as well as other delicious fruit.

Our family will be enjoying summers bounty, will yours?

We've been enjoying peppers, zucchini and green beans from our garden so far. Veggie gardening is very rewarding, not only for my husband and I, but for the kids too! They LOVE going out with me and helping weed and pick....now if I could just get them to eat what we pick! ;-)
