To Consign or not...?

Does anyone consign their used children's toys and clothing?

I have made several purchases at consignment shops, but never taken anything that I would like to sell. What has brought me to this point is...I gave a bag of Emily's clothing away, and later found out that the person took what they didn't want to a consignment shop. Really, I shouldn't be upset by that since I did give it away...but now I think I might as well skip the middle man and just take it myself.

Even, if I just make a few dollars, it is better than nothing, right?

I;ve done it for my own clothes. The clothing pretty much needs to be in pristine condition. I didn't make a lot, and decided it was more worth the tax credit to donate it.

I've done that in the past. Most places take 50% and so if that's worth it, go ahead. I've also sold things on ebay in bulk lots.

That would have irritated me a bit too about her taking them.

I took a bunch of Eli's stuff over about a month ago, not sure how it's going yet. I had saved SO much stuff up I'm sure they had to give a lot of it away...but I didn't just want to "Goodwill" it either! I say go for it!! ;-)

Do it!! Our local community has an "upscale consignment" twice a year - one in spring and one in fall. It's not old stuff or things that you can buy at Walmart or Target, but nice smocked dresses, upscale brands, those kinds of clothes. In the Spring, I made $388; two weeks ago I made $316! Smocked dresses sell like crazy and I sold all mine for $25 each. Cha-Ching!

I have never done consignment, I tend to donate old toys and clothes to various charities that will come and pick them up.

I do it, too. You just need to know what type of items they are looking for and when (winter, spring, etc) but I have gone in with BOXES of stuff and they sometimes only take a handful of things (because they have too much of that size, etc)

Hi Pam,

I always gave the girls' clothing to other families in the church. It was such fun to watch the dresses pass down the line. Much of what my girls received came from other church members.

One person did sell the things at her garage sale and then took those of us who gave her clothing out to lunch on the profits.

Oh I think I would feel a bit stung if someone I GAVE clothes to sold them?
Anyway, I just dropped off a big bag of stuff at Goodwill. I also give some stuff to friends.
I have not considered the consignment route. Perhaps I should!

you should do it! I have never done it because we dont have a good consignment shop around here but if I knew of one I'd do it too.

I've never done it myself, but say go for it! I've heard people complain that you never get as much money as you 'want', but in my opinion, its got to be more than if you just took it to good will. Right?
