Wanted....what do you think?

Our small town is a very active minor hockey town. We have a Junior B team called the Lincoln's, who are doing quite well this season. Friday night games are really well attended by the community.

This town does something I think is odd though, I need you to tell me if you do this in your community or is it something unique to where I live.

When ever one of the minor teams wins a championship they take a ride on top of the fire pumper truck. The team is perched up there and they ride around town screaming with the sirens blaring. This is what the truck looks like, and the team sits up there on the top. First, I can't imagine that from a safety perspective this is allowed. Then once they are up there they drive around, slow, but still it is moving.

When we first moved to town we didn't understand what was going on. We could hear the sirens and they were coming down our street, so obviously we were concerned that one of our neighbours was having a fire. Then we looked out and we saw a team on top. Years later we are used to it, as are most towns folk. Last night I could hear the truck coming, I was chatting with a neighbour as they drove by. A girls team had won the provincial championship and they were enjoying a victory ride.

We are at the opposite end of town from the firehall, so by the time they get here they had come clear across town. That is when I heard the siren that signals a real emergency. On top of our town hall there is an air siren that is sounded when the firefighters are called out. Now every one carries a beeper, but before the era of beepers this is how the volunteers where summoned to the firehall, and we still use it today.

So here is the pumper truck at the other side of town, with a team of girls on top, and they get an actual call. The truck dumped off the team and sped away to attend the call. A few minutes later the team came walking by.

Here is my question, do you do this in your town? Have you ever heard of this being done? And, do you think it is right to use the vehicle in this way? You may think I have poor community spirit, but I wouldn't allow my child to perch up on top. I also think that because of using the truck for this purpose it caused a delay in response time.

Do share, what is your opinion?

My husband is actually a volunteer firefighter on the local fire department. They don't do what your local fire department does with the teams, but I would imagine that it would be similar the fire truck being in a parade. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. I think it's a neat way to honor the teams. :-)

As far as response time, it is probably better! LOL! The guys probably already have their gear in the truck with them and can go straight to the fire. We live 3 miles from the fire hall here and some firefighters live even further away, so to actually already be in the truck would cut out a big chunk of the response time even after unloading a team! :-)

Nope, can't say I've ever heard of anyone doing that, except maybe at a parade.

I have never heard of that before--but--what a great way to honor a good Hockey team!!

I haven't heard of this either, but I don't really see the harm in it, I guess.

well our team doesn't sit ON the firetruck but more in the back of a pickup truck... then the firetruck will go ahead of the pickup with the sirens blaring... then after the pickup truck police will be behind with THEIR sirens too! haha, it's quite disturbing to someone who doesnt know whats going on! lol

That is fun for the team.

We are accustomed to seeing kids riding on top of the fire trucks in holiday parades. But for the winning of a sports event..that is new to me.

I don't see a huge problem with it. I know it would never happen in my community. The demand it would put on our resources would be too much for the local fire chief to be willing to take on. Not to mention the liability of something going wrong!

Great minds think alike, Pam! What a safety hazard and complete waste of tax payers' money!!

I've never seen that done here. That would just cause way too much traffic!!! LOL..people here in California want to get from point A to point B asap!!!

I don't think that is a very good idea. Seems like a bad practice to me.

I dont think its a good idea, especially because of the kids being dumped off when there was a real emergency and then also delayed response time!!! Someone could die in that three minutes it takes to unload the kids!!!
Yeah, I never heard of this before. We do have the fire trucks in our parade once a year.

I'm with you... we don't do that here. We have a city of about 80,000 and about 200,000 in the county... fire trucks will participate in parades and such but never for a team winning anything. Sigh...

This is a really cool thing your town has going on! Our town does not do this, our boys basketball team just won 5A state championship and our town DID NOTHING..... I think I am going to go and get the firetruck and get the bball team and drive them around town!!!!

We don't have that where we live, but it sounds fun! (although I too have an issue with the safety aspect...)

Our fire department just goes around to the schools here and hose everyone down! lol!

It is kind of weird. But, I guess it's fun, too! I'm not sure tax money should be used to pay for that, but I guess the fire department makes their own money, too ... so, ultimately, I think it's just a manner of is the constant siren annoying or not. Sounds pretty fun!

I think it sounds great, but you are right in that it only takes one little mistake to cost someone badly. Maybe in a parade but we do need to err on the side of caution. Wow, did I just say that? hope my parents didnt see it!

Have a great day!

I think it's cute. The firetrucks drove around at Christmas with Santa perched on top waving to the kids!

I'm from an inkadink town (graduating class 26 people) and we did it!

I have not see that where we live in MD but I am not sure that is that uncommon, I have seen Santa ride on a fire truck at Christmas. It does seems a little wasteful but I understand the spirit of hauling a team around on top of the town fire truck after a huge win.

That is too cool! Down here, that's common for cities that host parades in honor of state champions, etc. Only for the big wins, though! :)

They do that here when the band wins the state championship and yes, my kids have ridden on it for that. BUT, my kids are in high school. If they don't know how to hold on by that age, they deserve to fall off. lol

In a town near us when the Girls basketball team made the State Championship they got a police escort all the way into Madison where the Championship was being put on.

Nope, can't say I've ever heard of such a thing being done. I suppose if it's for special occasions it would be ok, but I'd also be worried about safety. I guess whether I would allow my child up there would also depend on their age.
