Remembering

This week we had a loss in our family. My great Aunt passed away. While I haven't seen her in several years, I have wonderful memories of her.

You see, as a child she was my best friend in the summer months.

Her cottage was about eight doors down from ours. We had a standing plan for me to meet her at 2:00 PM every afternoon for a swim in the bay. She and I would play in the cold water and then afterward we would sit on her sandy beach. She would sit and read, and I would play in the sand, or I would read as well. Sometimes I would just sit beside her. We would warm up in the warm afternoon sunshine.

In my mind's eye I can see her swimsuit sitting over the brick rail of the patio at her cottage, waiting to be put on for the afternoon swim; as I rode my bike in and parked it beside the cottage.

I would knock at her door and she would come right out to get the suit and get changed. I would just wait for her on the patio. We would go down the steep stone steps to the water's edge. We would leave our towels and shoes on the bottom step. She would wade in and I would usually run in beside her, or jump off the end of the short dock.

I dare say there was very few missed 2:00 PM swims. Even on drizzly afternoons I still went down, on those days we would do puzzles at her table in the kitchen nook, overlooking the bay.

Today I remember my Great Aunt as a caring, patient lady. She was a talented painter and a mother to two. She lost her first husband at an early age, but was able to find a partner later in life with a wonderful man. She loved the cottage, and spent a lot of time there, even as recently as a few years ago. But, I especially remember her as a wonderful friend to a young girl who really needed a friend to put in those summer days.

I will always remember you, Aunt Velma as that summertime friend.

Even though I am 8 years younger, I can picture it all - a little you and Aunt Velma, the steep stairs, the coldness of the water, and the wonder and of her sand pit, and the scariness of the sand pit that was basically overhanging the water! Thanks for bringing a tear to my eye. She truly was a great woman! My memories of her was that she always would say to me "Come down for some tomato soup?" Tomato soup was code for a vanilla ice cream cone between the two of us! She was a great lady! Love ya!

Excuse me, I saw where you posted on mckmama's blog that you had ablation twice. I have had it also and just wondered why you might have had it twice, if you don't mind me asking. I was under the impression that the procedure is permanent. Mine was also for SVT. Thank you.

Dee,
Thanks for the question, I don't mind answering at all. My first ablation was in 1995, my second was in June of 2008. I will probably need another in the future, as they were not able to re-create the exact problem in the lab. They just guessed as to which pathways were causing the problem. They told me that a lot people are repeat patients. I hope in your situation that you don't have any re-occurance.

Pam,
Thank you so much. I had my ablation in Sept 2005 and they were able to recreate mine and I have been ok so far. I'm sorry you still have trouble. Does that mean you are still on meds for it? It is interesting to talk to people who have had this done. I only know one other personally who has experienced it.
