A Day of Pampering

Friday we treated our little home to something it has been crying out for. Our little home needed a new roof and it has been begging and pleading with us. But to no avail, we just weren't giving in, until the snow began to melt. In a last ditch attempt our little house was going to throw a temper tantrum and throw a few shingles to the ground in hopes of getting our attention.

And, it worked!! The time has come, you are getting a new roof.

And, so the work began. A crew of five men rolled in at 8am, within a minute they were on the roof ripping the old shingles off with pitch forks. As they cleared another worker was starting to apply the new shingles behind them.

The roof received such pampering, it got seven new sheets of plywood which had become wet, six new attic vents, new flashing, and all new shingles! And as a deluxe treatment they also cleaned the gutters and re-tacked them to the sides of the roof. Oh, happy day when you are a roof that had been crying out for some attention!!

The work progressed really quickly and in no time they were using their large magnet rollers around the house to pick up any nails which had fallen. They had laid tarps around the house to catch any garbage which happened to fall, so clean up was really fast. At 2:10pm they were gone, the new roof was finished, and the party had begun.

Until at 2:18pm I hear the door bell ring, upon looking out I see an official Government of Ontario vehicle sitting in our driveway. I answer the door to a Ministry of Labour representative asking if we had our roof done today. Umm, yeah, please say you can tell. We just spent over $4000.00 on it, it better look new!!

But this was not the purpose of their visit to our home today, they were not there to admire our new addition to our family. They were there following a complaint that the workers doing this job were not following proper safety regulations, such as wearing hard hats and using safety harnesses while on the roof. My question is who would call in this complaint, a nosy neighbour or a passerby?

But, since there was nothing to see here they just decided to have a little chat with me. After a twenty minute friendly visit they left. I immediately called the owner of the roofing company which we employed to give him a heads up that they may be tracking him down. When he answered his cell and I explained what had taken place, his answer to me we: 'I wish this was 1830 and I could take my musket and blow them out of there!' Umm, okay!?!

So in the end we have a beautiful new roof which we can only admire from outside and standing a ways down the street. We had the excitement of workers at our home which is the be all and end all for a five year old boy and his little sister. We have two broken items which fell off our knick knack shelf while they were hammering away on the roof. We had the opportunity to meet some government officials who made a very special housecall. We have the question not answered as to who made the phone call........Priceless!!

My husbands brother put our new roof on last summer. We have a 2 story house with a lot of different heights of roof and a lot of it!! He did it alone in a week. No hard hat, harness or neighbor complaints. Tell your neighbors they are just jealous!!! It looks great! I guess the hats and harness thing is an insurance issue to the government.

Nice! We are getting all new shingles come warmer weather, Hurricane Ike and then all the wind we have had since really did a number on ours too! Sounds like you got a good price, our roof was estimated at over 6,000! Yikes! We have a Dutch Colonial (kinda looks like an old barn) so its got some real steep pitches. Congrats on all the "roof pampering!"

Ahh! I am SO behind in my blog reading! Tonight is catch up night! What is lions and lambs in March? lol I've never heard of that! COOL new roof day! I hope it's gorgeous when it's done! When we went for a walk earlier last week I was all about looking at roofs... no idea why. I'm sure I'd love yours! haha

Why would somebody even care or take the time to make that phone call? Somebody has entirely too much time on their hands.

I'm glad it's done now! We did it a few years ago and I WISH they'd used a magnet roller. We picked up nails for 2 years after the fact. Good thing our kids are older.

Congratulations on your new roof. I like the idea of large magnet rollers to pick up nails and other small metal debris left behind.

Glad the issue about the workers was settled immediately.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Man, whoever made that phone call must have been really concerned for those workers. Yeah right.
Your new roof looks lovely. :)

Well, the roof looks great!! Sorry about the investigation. People have nothing better to do with their time. A few years ago my neighbors called the ASPCA and said we went away for a week and left our dog with no one to watch him. Then last year when we were in the hospital having Baby Sister they called our town and said we abandoned the dog again. RIDICULOUS!!!

Looks like a lot of work! But it will serve you well. I live in a condo so don't have to worry about stuff like that. Yay :)

We did our roof a few years ago and it made me so nervous to watch that I had to leave and get some pampering for myself.

New roof: awesome. Blowing people away with a musket: weird. Enjoy your new digs :)

Cool deal on the new roof. If people minded their own business things would be alot easier but then we would not have the entertaining posts to read. LOL
