ALOHA FRIDAY!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

My question for today:

If you are told by your dentist that you needed a root canal or have a tooth extracted, which would you go with?

I have an infection in my second molar on the top. My dentist doesn't feel comfortable doing the root canal himself, so he is going to send me to a specialist.(if I chose to go that route). Is it worth the expense, or should I just get the tooth extracted and be done with it?

I just don't know. Which one will they put you completely out for? I would go with that one. :) I am a big chicken.

I would probably do the root canal. There is something squicky to me about losing a tooth.

Well considering I do not like going to the dentist or pain I would probably go with the extraction just because it would be over quicker than the root canal. Sorry that probably didn't help much.

Well, considering in my past life I was a dental assistant .. oh, I do kid. That was just before I had my kiddo. But, I would opt for the extraction if it's a molar. It's cheaper and the shifting of surrounding teeth will not be that bad. Plus, you can't see it when you smile! :-) Also, root canals in multi-rooted molars can be super tricky and may cause more problems after surgery. ... Then again, I'm not Dr. Big Momma or anything ....

I would ask for an antibiotic and go home and take some Tylenol.
Then again it would be unlikely that I would have gone to the dentist to begin with :(

I say pluck it out!!!!

For a molar, I'd probably go with the extraction and be done with it.

Considering I'm a dental phobic and have had both procedures done, I'd say the root canal under conscious sedation. Only way for *me* to go at least. Good luck with your decision. :)

Happy Aloha Friday!

After getting a second opinion from my podiatrist, I would go with a root canal. It's nice to have all one's teeth.

I'd probably opt for the root canal. Even though it's a molar it might show when you smile that it's not there. Good luck!

I've had to make that decision! I told the dentist to pull it. He didn't 'want' to because they 'are in the business of saving teeth'... of course he would've rather me done the root canal, he could get more money out of me! Root canal, then crown, then eventually pulled anyway. I told him I couldn't pay him anyway...hmmm, yep, he pulled it.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

There is always a silver lining....

Go with the root canal and enjoy the laughing gas!

I'm not sure what I would do. I guess probably do whatever I could to save the tooth. Good luck!

I would probably get it pulled. As long as it wasnt in the front or anything. Hope your tooth is feeling better!

That is a hard question for me to answer. I don't know but I guess I would ask for his best opinion.

I don't know. Whichever made my teeth the most like the original :)

Probably the root canal. I don't get too bothered by dental procedures. Good luck!

I would probably go the root canal route..but I'm not a professional! I say go with what is going to make you feel better and not have to return 6 mos down the road!

Sending you lots of hugs! Hope you feel better, lovie!

I have had a root canal done by an oral surgeon and it wasn't bad at ALL. I would save the tooth and have the root canal done!

I had to have a root canal a while ago and it wasn't bad. I've never had a tooth pulled (I still have my wisdom teeth too) so maybe I shouldn't have an opinion about this! :)

I am now traumatized and petrified of dentists over a root canal, so I obviously wouldn't go that route for a back tooth, lol.
I would have it pulled, but for me it would be the cost. If it is a front tooth or one that will cause a problem later, I would do the root canal. But I have had several back teeth removed (thanks to root canals from military dentists) and it doesn't cause a problem.

I'd go with the root canal.
Having a tooth pulled leaves a gap that can re-align all the teeth which isn't a good thin.

Ooh, boy, I just HATE going to the dentist. I mean-H-A-T-E it with a passion. I have recently had a couple of root canals done lately (as a result of NOT going to the dentist-AHEM!! and the key is going to someone with good technique! This last time was not so bad. Also, I feel if your teeth can at all be saved--you should always try to save your teeth before you start yanking them out!!

Just my two cents (for all its worth.

I might just get it pulled. My Mom just had a root canal and the dentist screwed it up and now she has to go to a specialist and it is very difficult to fix. Although, if you are going to the specialist first you might have better luck. Can they extract the tooth and then just implant a fake one in its place?

Momstart said...

I would go with the extraction, I have heard that root canals are painful and they have to be re-done over time.

Abby said...

I don't know. I think I would choose extraction but I haven't ever had to do either. (Knocking on wood right now!)

ASHLEY said...

I WOULD DO THE EXTRACTION.

A root canal. I had a bunch of teeth pulled when I was little and it still haunts me!

blueviolet said...

I would do the root canal. I'm not pulling out anything that I don't have to.

If it was a back tooth, I would just have that bad boy pulled :o)

I actually had that come up just last year - I broke one of my top back molars - the problem I have is that I have extra long roots, and my dentist was concerned about extracting it because of the proximity of the roots to my sinuses...plus then it would be considered oral surgery, which is pretty pricey comparatively. He wanted to refer me to a specialist to do the root canal, then I'd come back to him for the crown - but our insurance is pretty sparse, and there are very few 'specialists' in our area that take our insurance, so he decided he'd go ahead and do the root canal himself, he would just have to do it over 2 different appointments because of the roots being so long. So I ended up having 4 different appointments - 2 for the root canal, and 2 for the crown - but I'd much rather keep my teeth than lose any of them - even molars. ;)

I don't know. I would go with whatever was less pain and less problems in the future. I know that's not much help. Good luck.

I cannot offer an opinion on this one. Ouch. Poor Pam!

I would go with extraction. I just had my back molar refilled again!

Jenni Jiggety said...

I'd go root canal!

Tooth extraction - the quicker it's over with the better. :P

PULL IT!

Hm.. from my perspective I'd get it out. I had a root canal for years and years on one of my front teeth and then it was cracked and needed repair and I decided to get it out and get an implant.
It was a long and expensive process but once it was done I haven't had to worry about it since.
