My new friend at Our Daily Big Top has tagged me for a pet meme. It looks fun, so here goes....

1. What is the first pet you remember?

The first pet I remember is our childhood family dog named Butch. Butch was a beagle and he was a howler, as all beagles are. We have a cottage with an escarpment behind it, Butch would go up there and be gone for days on the trail of a fox or rabbit, but you could always hear his howl, so you knew he was okay.

Butch was an awesome entertainer. The summer my aunt and uncle came from California, in their RV, Butch and I put on a daily variety show. We practiced before hand and then later set up lawn chairs for the audience to view our show. He was such a patient dog, I think of him often, and always with love.

2. How many different kinds of pets have you owned?
We had two dogs, Butch and Daisy Duke. (from the Dukes of Hazard era of course)
We had a ton of cats, they all came from the same extraordinary mother cat name Blacky. Blacky was the smartest cat ever, she was an excellent hunter and great mother. She was also a great defender of her property, she would fight off strays that would come around. Strange though, if she fought off all the strays, how did she produce so many kittens??

3. What was your strangest pet?
My strangest pet was a pet chipmunk. This little guy named Chippy was the tamest chipmunk. He would come out of his hole at the sound of my voice. He would play with me. I would put my leg out with my toe pointed down, he would run up my leg, jump to my arm and then come up to my shoulder. He was only there for one summer though, I looked for him in the following years. I thought I had given him enough peanuts to last the winter, but I guess not.

4. What is your dream pet?
Because of my mother I would have to say a dachshund. They are $1000.00 though!!

5. What is your nightmare pet?
This is not really a nightmare pet, but I had nightmares about a bird. When I was small I had a re-occuring nightmare about a very large bird. The large bird would swoop in across the field across the road from our house when I was waiting for the bus. The large bird would pick me up and carry me away.

6. Your best/ funniest pet story...
I think my funniest pet story would be of Butch and his love for putting on our variety show.

Also Daisy Duke one day at the cottage. We were away from the cottage for the day. Daisy was tied up for the day to keep her out of trouble. My mom had put laundry out to dry for the day. We had clothes lines run between trees. And when I say laundry, I mean clothes were washed in one of those old wringer washers. So laundry was a lot of work. She had to stay at the washer to wring all those clothes through, and then hang it all on those lines. When we got home that night Daisy had come loose of her chain, and had pulled all the clothes down. Needless to say Daisy was in the Dog House!!

7. Tell your worst/saddest pet story...
As Butchie got older, his balance was off. One night at the cottage we had a campfire down by the water. Butchie stumbled as he came down the hill and ended up in the fire. My dad pulled him from the fire pit and took him into the bay. That was pretty scary.

Another sad story was my sweet cat Peaches. I took her to be de-clawed, they over medicated her and she died during the operation. I was so upset, and still feel guilty and sad about her. My last memory of her before leaving the house that morning was her standing at her food bowl looking at me wondering why I wasn't feeding her.

8. Did you ever have a scary animal experience?
About three or four years ago at the cottage a brown bear walked across our deck at dusk. The sliding door was still open, he could of just walked into the cottage if he chose to.

9. What was your favorite pet?
I loved them all. They all gave me such great memories. I don't think I could choose one over the other.

10. What did you really want to tell us about pets that didn't fit into the other questions?
I have neglected to mention our current pet cat, Claire. This cat truly has nine lives, although I am afraid she is running short on lives. Funny thing, when our youngest daughter was born Claire didn't come upstairs for one whole year. It was like she was on protest of another baby showing up. Then one day out of the blue she remembered there was an upstairs. She came up and continues to, she is even back to sleeping at the foot of our bed each night.

Four people I tag are

Jeauxdi because she has two of the cutest fur babies, that she loves alot. I think she would have some great stories to tell of them.

Janet because I am so intrigued by her part of the world. She has awesome photos, and I would love to learn more of her life in SA.

hippo chick
Hippo Chick because I am really enjoying getting to know her. She must have a pet story or two lurking about. And I love her Hippo Hugs.

Laurie in Ca
Laurie because she is truly one of the sweetest people ever. I am so honoured to call her friend. I just love reading and learning about her. One day I am going to meet this lady!!

A chipmunk? How cool. My son caught one in a bug hut of all things. It was so crazy I told him to let it go. I was afraid it was going to bite him. Guess you have to let them approach you?

Oh I also see big turkey vultures around here and think that they're big enough to swoop down and pick up a child. They are pretty intimidating. Thanks for playing.

Thanks for stopping by my blog this afternoon. A chipmunk is definately an interesting pet. My neighbors have two beagles....one is definately NOT like the ones you read about and the other one he's a "talker".
